IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group Launches 6GHz Band IMT System Test

TIME:2022-07-08

Recently, the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group launched the 6GHz band IMT system test. This test, led by China Academy of Information Technology and Communications, was jointly completed by operators and equipment manufacturers. It is the first time that China and even the world have conducted IMT system test in the 6GHz frequency band, which is of great milestone significance. The test results can provide an important reference for future exploration of the feasibility of large-scale deployment of IMT macro base stations in the 6GHz frequency band and research and development of key technologies.

In view of the rapid development of 5G at present, it is estimated that in the future, 5.5G and 6G will need more medium band spectrum to meet the business needs of consumers and thousands of businesses, and build a solid foundation for the realization of national digitalization. The 6GHz band can better balance coverage and capacity, and is an important band to meet the above requirements. In addition, WRC-19 has also conducted research on the use of 6GHz as IMT.

In order to explore the feasibility of deploying the IMT system in the 6GHz frequency band and study the development direction of its key technologies, the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, based on the principle of integrating with the 3GPP international standard, formulated the functional technical requirements and test methods of 6GHz base station prototype equipment for 5G enhancement technology research and development test in May this year, and the functional test of 6GHz base station prototype equipment in the first phase was officially launched immediately.

In the 5G Test Working Group of IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, China Academy of Information and Communication, together with operators and equipment manufacturers, built a laboratory test environment and carried out indoor function tests on 6GHz base station prototypes and test terminals of some equipment manufacturers. The test covers carrier bandwidth, parameter set, frame structure, cell synchronization, uplink and downlink adaptive coding modulation, MIMO transmission and other aspects. From the test results, the base station prototype and test terminal generally meet the basic functional requirements of 3GPP, and all test items have passed the test acceptance.

Subsequently, the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group will further track ITU's research on the use of 6GHz band IMT and the latest progress in 6GHz band NR standardization in 3GPPR17 and other versions, sort out China's needs and challenges for deploying IMT systems in 6GHz band, and constantly improve relevant test plans and plans. At the same time, according to the distribution of test spectrum, the next stage of outfield coverage, capacity and other testing work will be started in due time.
